Disconnects and limited access

Can anyone help with this issue. I've been a Cox customer for a year now and I'm really getting tired of calling the automated system to have  my modem reset every 2 weeks. I constantly have slow, lag filled games on my PS3; I have to disconnect and then reconnect to the ISP at random because my laptop and PS3 get limited connection prompts or it disconnects altogether and the signal for use through my cell phones Wi-Fi reception is sometimes horrible. Contacting Cox is a waste of time because all you get is a low end techie who seems to only be able to give you answers from a trouble shooting book......my router is in the adjacent room. I'm going to try a new router, any suggestions besides the choices Cox recommends......which are probably as outdated as this Cisco router I have.
