I was in the same boat starting this past week, it did start about the time I got a new modem. The data usage went crazy off the chart (I didn't realize we had data caps until I got an email). I changed all my network/router passwords as a precaution -- of course all the malware checks (using Malwarebytes and MRT) came up clean. We haven't downloaded movies or watched NetFlix in that period, we are gamers -- but nothing unusual that would cause the spike. Yesterday, it finally hit a realistic volume since the spikes started.
