I'm thinking there's just something strange about the setup at your workplace that may be contributing.  One way to test that would be to try IE from a location other than your work.

downloaded files get names changed

When I download an attachment the file name gets changed to "viewattachment". Why won't it keep the original attachment name? Where is the setting to correct this?madmac99@cox.net

An online backup would definitely explain the traffic you were seeing.  Perhaps there's an option within Carbonite to throttle the upload to mitigate any bandwidth usage issues.
